Fire Safety Week

This week, the children learned about fire safety.  We visited the Yarmouth Fire Station on Tuesday, and the smoke trailer and an ambulance visited Rowe School on Wednesday.  The children had the opportunity to experience how to crawl low and safely through a smoke-filled room.  The children also had the opportunity to explore the back of an ambulance.

During Reading Workshop we:

  • chose books for our own book baskets.  The children will begin doing this every week and will read the same 10-12 books for one school week.  Research supports that children improve their fluency and comprehension when they read the same book multiple times.
  • read the words in a book called Fire Truck.  The book follows a predictable pattern, with the last word on each page changing.  The children used the pictures to figure out the last word. We used this book to learn the words "I" and "the," and we added these words to our word wall.
  • learned that the more times a reader reads a book (whether it be the words or the pictures), the more fluent a reader becomes.

Instead of reading workshop on Wednesday, we began our literacy stations.  Normally, we will have a designated block of time for stations and a separate time for reading workshop.  Since it was our first day doing literacy stations, there was a lot of explaining and modeling that needed to take place. Because of that, we did not have time for reading workshop.  We also did stations on Thursday. Through stations, children are able to work with letters and words (ABC station), read poems (poetry station), write (writing station), and practice skills on the iPads.

During Writing Workshop we:
  • learned that writers put more and then more on the page.  They add details to show who was there, where they were, and what was happening.
  • learned that writers make sure to write words every day.
During Math we:
  • created number boards.  These were sent home on Tuesday.  Through this activity, children showed the succession of numbers, used one-to-one correspondence to show a certain number, and noticed that as you count, the next number is one more than the previous number.

  • learned about adding one and subtracting one.
During Science we began learning about the life cycle of plants.  Ms. Curit, an ed tech at Rowe School, helped us plant seeds.  Over the next couple weeks, we will observe these seeds go through their life cycle.

Enjoy this beautiful fall weekend!
