Ocean Life

We launched our ocean unit this week.  Our focus for this unit will be on the intertidal zone and waves.  We began our unit by learning what the intertidal zone is and talking about what is living and nonliving in that zone.  Next week, we will learn about specific creatures that live in tidal pools.

During Reading Workshop we:

  • learned how buddies can act out a book together, one person being the narrator and the other child pretending to be the characters.
  • talked about how readers can improve their fluency by "scooping up" several words at a time instead of pointing and hopping to every word.
  • learned about contractions.
This week during Math we:
  • practiced telling and solving number stories.

  • learned about fact families.

  • played an exchange game to help us practice exchanging ten ones for one ten and ten tens for one hundred.

  • played an addition game.

During Writing Workshop we organized our writing portfolios.  The children are very excited to share these with you at our learning celebration next week!  As a reminder, our learning celebration will be held in our classroom on Thursday, June 9 between 3:30 and 5:30.  You may stop by with your child anytime during that block of time and can expect to spend 20-30 minutes with your child.  I look forward to seeing all of you then!
