Planting Seeds

This week, we got together with our first grade reading buddies to plant pumpkin seeds for our school garden.  Parent volunteer, Mrs. Charette, helped the children make a newspaper pot to plant the seeds in.  The kindergartners will water these in the classroom, then they will be planted outside for the summer.  Hopefully when your children come back as first graders in the fall, they will be able to harvest the pumpkins!

This week during Reading Workshop we:
  • reviewed that after readers have figured out an unknown word, they go back and reread the sentence to make sure the word makes sense.
  • learned to pay attention to the pictures to help us better understand the setting in a story and how/if it changes throughout the story.
  • learned to add dialogue to a story based on what we think a character might say in a moment.
This week during Writing Workshop, we wrapped up our poetry unit.  The children chose their favorite poem to publish.  I typed their poems, then they illustrated them.  On Friday, we celebrated the end of our unit with a poetry share.  The language the children used in their poems was impressive!

This week during Math we:
  • spent a couple days playing math games to practice our addition facts.

  • learned about coordinates on a grid.
  • practiced reading and finding 2-digit numbers on a number grid.

Enjoy the long weekend!
Best,
Katie

Arbor Day

We had a beautiful morning to celebrate Arbor Day on Friday.  The children had the opportunity to watch a tree being planted by Yarmouth's Arborist, then all the children decorated their own pots and planted a tree in their pots.  The children are bringing these home today so they can plant their trees at home!

Enjoy the beautiful weekend!
