A Rainy Friday

Another week of school has passed us by.
On Wednesday we planted our fast growing seeds! We are hoping to see some sprouts when we come back to school after the weekend. We also painted our own pumpkins and turned them into jack-o'-lanterns.

During Reading Workshop we:

  • Made Orange Pumpkin Orange Pumpkin What Do You See books!
  • Practiced getting an excited feeling before we started reading.
  • Learned how to make a plan for reading workshop.
During Writing Workshop we:
  • Started labeling the room.
  • Got outside and drew leaves to practice looking for detail.
  • Continued working on writing labels.
  • Practiced stretching out words and looking for the different sounds.
During Math we:
  • Learned about number stories.
  • Started new math stations! (iPads became a station!)
  • Continued our work with Cuisenaire Rods.
  • Made a pumpkin counting book.
It has been a wonderful week! Today was a wet and rainy Friday, but we still made the best of it.

Here are some highlights from free exploration/inside recess that the kids wanted to share...
Have a lovely weekend!

Saying Goodbye to our Butterfly Friends!

What a lovely week! Wonderful weather and fun things happening in the classroom make for a quick week.

This week we said goodbye to our butterfly friends. We took a walk to a nice grassy area right behind our soccer field and let our friends free. While it was sad to say goodbye, we know our butterflies will be happier outside enjoying nature.

During Reading Workshop we:
  • Continued looking for popcorn words as we read.
  • Practiced pointing to each word and tried to make a sound for the letters we know.
  • Talked about what we read.
  • Met with our first grade reading buddies for the first time!

During Writing Workshop we:
  • Practiced planning what we are going to write by telling a friend the story first.
  • Added feelings into our writing.
  • Worked on creating a strong setting for our stories.
  • Continued to share our stories with the class.

During Math we:
  • Learned about number stories.
  • Talked about rectangles.
  • Practiced counting forward and backwards.
  • Continued working with Cuisenaire rods.
Our tech specialist, Mrs. Wolinsky came in on Friday to teach us about iPads! Each student was able to use their own iPad. Mrs. Wolinsky taught us how to use an app called Letter School and then students were able to practice. We are lucky to have four iPad in our class and will be using them during math and literacy station time starting this week!

Have a lovely week,
Jenna
