Pumpkins and Fire Safety

Last week was quite busy!  We visited the Yarmouth Fire Station on Tuesday, the smoke trailer on Wednesday, and Wolfe's Neck Farm on Thursday.  Many of you were able to join us at the farm, and I hope you agree that the day was full of learning and fun!

During Reading Workshop last week, we started learning about reading words.  We learned:
  • that when we are learning how to read words in a just right book, the words usually follow a pattern.  The same words repeat on every page, with just the last word or two changing.  We can look at the pictures, or what we call "Eagle Eye," to help us figure out the word that changes.  We practiced this with a book called Fire Truck
  • the words I, the, and see.  We added these words to our classroom word wall.  Words that are added to our word wall are words children are expected to be able to read as a quick as a snap.  These are sight words that appear most often in books and often times cannot be sounded out.
  • that readers point under one word for every one word they read.  Readers hop from word word to the next.
  • about rhyming words.
During Math we:
  • spent three days learning about teen numbers.  We learned that teen numbers are always a group of ten and some ones (or zero ones in the case of 10).  That is why one is always the first digit in a teen number.  We watched the video below to help us learn these "tricky teens."  I encourage you to watch the video with your child...it's quite catchy!

  • practiced solving number stories by drawing pictures.
  • learned about symmetry through painting.

 During Writing Workshop we:
  • learned that we can use the words on the word wall the help us when we are writing.
  • reviewed that writers leave spaces between their words.
  • chose one of our stories to "fancy-up" and share.  We will share those stories this week.  The rest of our stories were sent home.  I hope you enjoyed reading them!
During Science we:
  • learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin, both through our field trip and in class lessons.

Above: Children created a life cycle pumpkin to practice telling the stages in a pumpkin's life cycle.

While this week will not be as busy with field trips, it will be just as busy in the classroom.
Have a nice week.
Katie
