This week during Reading Workshop we continued to tell stories through the pictures. We:
- practiced making our reading sound like a storyteller. We talked about using transition words to connect one page to the next.
- learned to get to know a book by doing a picture walk before reading the story.
- learned that the more times we read a book, the better we become at reading it.
This week during Word Work and Handwriting we:
- practiced writing the letters D and P.
- focused on the sounds that d, f, and p make.
- sorted the letters Dd, Ff, and Pp.
- practiced writing and spelling our names.
- thought of words that start with the same sound as the first sound in our names.
- counted the number of letters in our names.
- learned that in addition to labeling our pictures with words, we can also write a sentence about our stories.
- learned that after writing words, a writer reads what he/she has written.
- learned that we can stretch a story across multiple pages.
- reviewed that when writers want to write a word, they slowly stretch the word out like a rubber band then write a letter for every sound they hear. If they are not sure what letter makes a sound, they can make a squiggle on their paper.
- learned about two types of patterns: repeating patterns and growing patterns.
- played Dot Card Memory, a card game that helps us recognize different ways to show a number.
- played Dot Card Top-It, a game to help us practice counting and comparing.
- explored the characteristics of triangles.
Next week is Fire Safety Week. We will visit the Yarmouth Fire Station on Tuesday, and the smoke trailer will visit Rowe School on Tuesday.
Picture day is next Thursday, October 8.
Have a nice weekend!
