- reviewed that when we come to a word we don't know and we think we've figured out what the word says, we need to ask ourselves three questions: Does it look right? Does it sound right (Is it a real word)? Does it make sense?
- learned a new strategy for reading words we don't know: Chunky Monkey. This strategy reminds us to look for chunks we know inside of words. For example, in the word "stand," children should be able to find the chunk "and."
- added "do" and "at" to our word wall.
- learned about "Tryin' Lion," a character to remind us not to give up when we come to a word we don't know.
This week during Writing we continued to write small moment stories. We:
- learned that writers can prepare to write by verbally telling a small moment story across their fingers.
- reviewed that when we want to spell a word we: say the word, say the sounds in the word, and write at least one letter for every sound we hear.
"excited" and "Mount Washington" - reviewed that writers need to leave spaces between their words.
- spent Thursday and Friday completing our midyear writing prompt. The children wrote a small moment story without any support from me. These will be shared with parents at conferences in a few weeks.
This week during Math we:
- sorted shapes and spent more time learning about shape characteristics.
- learned about the subtraction symbol and solved subtraction number stories.
- played math games.
- used our whiteboards for various number activities (write the number that comes next, write the number of times I clap, write the number of fingers I'm holding up...).
- discussed patterns we notice on the number grid.
